How to Watch NHL Without Cable in 2026-27

Hockey is the sport where cord cutting requires the most care, because a large block of national games is streaming-exclusive with no television option anywhere — including in the two teams' own markets. Understanding that quirk is the difference between a working setup and a frustrating one.

The 2026-27 season opened on September 29, 2026 with an ESPN tripleheader.

The two national partners

PartnerGamesNotes
ESPN / ABC100 exclusive games53 on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC; 47 streaming-only on ESPN's service, Disney+ and Hulu
TNT Sports72 regular-season gamesWednesday doubleheaders at 7:30 p.m. ET, plus other nights

ESPN carries the first three rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. TNT has exclusive rights to the 2027 Stanley Cup Final.

The streaming-exclusive trap

This is the single most important thing to know about watching hockey in 2026-27.

Forty-seven of ESPN's 100 national games appear on no television channel at all — not ESPN, not ESPN2, not ABC, and not the local regional network in either team's market. They stream on ESPN's direct-to-consumer service, Disney+ and Hulu, and nowhere else.

That means a live TV package alone will not cover a full season. If your team is in one of those windows, you need a streaming subscription regardless of what cable-replacement service you carry.

What each option costs

ServiceMonthlyAnnualWhat it unlocks
ESPN Unlimited$31.99$319.99ESPN networks, ABC content, and the 47 streaming-exclusive games
ESPN Select$13.99$139.99The former ESPN+ catalog — check whether your games are included before relying on it
HBO Max Standard$18.49—TNT's 72 games and the 2027 Stanley Cup Final
HBO Max Premium$22.99—Same, in 4K
Disney+ / HuluVaries by tier—Carry the ESPN streaming-exclusive games
Sling TVFrom ~$45.99—TNT on both Orange and Blue; Orange adds ESPN
YouTube TV$82.99—ESPN and TNT in one package
Hulu + Live TV$89.99—Same, with Disney+ and ESPN content included
DirecTV Stream$84.99–$171.98—Full lineup, plus NHL Center Ice availability

A critical detail on HBO Max: the ad-supported Basic plan at $10.99 does not include live sports. TNT's hockey requires Standard or Premium. Subscribing to the cheapest tier and discovering this on a Wednesday night is a common mistake.

Fubo does not carry TNT at all, which makes it a poor choice for hockey despite its sports reputation.

The free option: six teams broadcast locally over the air

Six clubs put most or all of their local games on free over-the-air television: Seattle, Vegas, Nashville, Utah, Tampa Bay and Florida. If you follow one of those teams and live in market, a $20 to $60 antenna covers the bulk of your season at no recurring cost.

Check a coverage map for your address before buying — reception depends on terrain and distance from the transmitter far more than on antenna price.

Out-of-market packages

If your team plays somewhere else, you need one of two products:

NHL Power Play carries more than 1,050 out-of-market games through the ESPN app for ESPN direct-to-consumer subscribers. This is now the primary out-of-market route.

NHL Center Ice remains available through DirecTV satellite, carrying up to 40 games a week plus NHL Network.

Neither package includes ESPN's national streaming-exclusive games — those require the ESPN subscription itself.

Your local team, if it is not one of the six

Most clubs' local rights sit with regional sports networks or team-operated streaming apps, with direct-to-consumer prices generally running from about $14.99 to $34.99 a month depending on the market. That landscape has been unstable for several years, so check your team's current carrier rather than assuming last season's answer still holds.

A workable setup

Minimum viable: ESPN Unlimited at $319.99 a year. It covers 100 national games including the 47 streaming exclusives and the first three playoff rounds.

Complete: add HBO Max Standard at $18.49 a month for TNT's 72 games and the Stanley Cup Final. Roughly $540 a year for the full national schedule.

If your team is in market: check whether you are one of the six free over-the-air clubs first. That changes the arithmetic considerably.

Check your mobile carrier and internet provider's perks page before subscribing — streaming inclusions are a standard retention tool, and paying twice is common.

Bandwidth

Hockey is unusually demanding on a stream because of the puck's speed and the amount of fine motion on screen. Compression artifacts show up faster here than in most sports.

UseRecommended throughput
One HD game10–15 Mbps
One 4K game25 Mbps or more
Two concurrent games50 Mbps or more

Wired Ethernet to your primary streaming device is the most effective fix available, and it matters more for hockey than for slower sports. If your internet plan has not been reviewed in a few years, comparing current fiber and fixed-wireless tiers for your address is generally worth more than new hardware.

Frequently asked questions

Can I watch the NHL without cable? Yes, but you need at least one streaming subscription — 47 national games appear on no television channel anywhere.

What are the streaming-exclusive games? Forty-seven of ESPN's 100 national games stream only on ESPN's service, Disney+ and Hulu, with no TV option even in the teams' local markets.

Where is the 2027 Stanley Cup Final? TNT, exclusively — streaming on HBO Max Standard or Premium.

Does the cheapest HBO Max plan work? No. The ad-supported Basic plan at $10.99 excludes live sports.

Which teams are free over the air? Seattle, Vegas, Nashville, Utah, Tampa Bay and Florida broadcast most or all local games over the air.

How do I watch out-of-market games? NHL Power Play through the ESPN app, or NHL Center Ice via DirecTV.

Does Fubo carry NHL games? Partially. Fubo does not carry TNT, so its 72-game slate and the Stanley Cup Final are missing.

Bottom line

ESPN Unlimited is non-negotiable for a full season because of the streaming exclusives. Add HBO Max Standard for TNT and the Stanley Cup Final. If your team is one of the six broadcasting free over the air, buy an antenna first and see how much of your season it already covers.
